Lounging in the garden on a Saturday afternoon. Sun splitting the stones as the humans of number 6 gather around the (round) garden table. Eyes closed and blissful awareness of the tranquil surroundings. Kids are quiet, hubster is dozing (thankfully) and everyone is just…. being. No screaming, no fighting, no playing (no fun?) no complaining. Nope none of that. Just…. bliss.
And I think “Isn’t this just grand? Yes, I can do this. I can exist right here” I can teach my children how to relax. How to be calm human beings. That’s the secret to life right? Lead by example.
Yes! Why have I never noticed this before?! If I’m calm the kids kids will be calm! Simple!
No more rushing, no more “Come ON! Let’s GO! Where are your SHOES?! We’re LATE!! GO, GO, GO!!
Nope, none of it. From now on I will be Zen. I am Namaste incarnate. My house is the chill zone.
Things will still be done, at a relaxed pace. Bob Marley on repeat. My home will be hygge to the max (hot cocoa by the fire here I come)
Screen time will be reduced and together we will look back and chuckle over how silly we were for watching so much TV before!
And at Christmas we will nestle together by a roaring fire with our favourite books and a creamy cup of hot cocoa (a second mention… hmmm, might go make some…)
Ahhhhhh…… Wonderful!
But wait!… what’s that?
My blissful daydream is interrupted by a strange yet all too familiar noise.
“No! That’s MINE!”
“I had it FIRST”
“NOOOOOO!!”
Well there goes the quiet.
The younger two are fighting over a cushion. There are plenty of cushions around them but they’re hell bent of winning this one.
They start to physically fight over the cushion and end up banging into daddy.
There goes the sleeping hubster…. Damn it!
All bets are off. Life is back to normal. My dreams of a beautiful utopia are dashed.
I roll my eyes as the elder two appear from inside the house demanding I solve their debate over who gets to sit at the top of the table for dinner.
Like, really?!
Back to reality…
The Art of doing nothing is simply glorious. If you simply have the means to do nothing.
